My 4 year old Dell XPS L701x has 2 or 3 vertical lines (yellow, red and the blue line with variable occurrence). When I connect my laptop to an external display; in this case my samsung TV, the lines do not show up and I can thankfully watch movies and navigate windows without these lines. I guess this strongly indicates that the graphics and motherboard are not the cause of this defect?
I have tried also tried changing the video cable with the identical Dell part number but the lines still show up, so it definitely has nothing to do with this connection.
From this I strongly believe it is the laptop screen that requires replacement, would really appreciate if someone could verify this? If so, I would love to replace this screen (1600 x 900) to a full HD screen. My second question is would this laptop be compatible with a screen of the same model but with a higher resolution? Knowing that the video cable supports full HD and my GPU (nvidia GT 435m) can support upto 2560 x 1600, I don't see why it wouldn't work but I'm not 100% sure.
After purchasing the screen if it doesn't work, I do have an option to refund this, so please advise how I should proceed.
P.S. There is virtually no price difference between the two different resolution screens.
