Harddisk recovery after 2000-142 error

My 4½ year old Alienware M17 seems to have completely died on me now. In the last year I have had a few harddisk problems, which I have managed to solve. But this time my harddisk have crashed and on startup just shows "disk error failed press control-alt-delete", which does nothing. Diagnostic shows the 2000-142 and 2000-147, where especially the first one seems fatal from what I can read on the internet.

I have seen that the general response is that the harddisk is toast, and you can only retrieve your data by extracting the harddisk and insert in a case to use as an external harddisk, which you connect to another computer.

I have bought such a case, where I can fit one of my harddisks (I have two 500gb harddisks, but only one fits the external harddisk case). Unfortunately the answer I get from this is that the harddisk can't be read and needs to be formatted before use.

So what now? It seems like one of the disks have a problem, but I don't know if it's the one I have tried. Also since the harddisks are configured as one harddisk, so how can I split theem up to retrieve my data?

Or can the alienware be rescued despite the 2000-142 problem?
