Dell XPS 12: how to stretch old programs to fill the entire display?

I want to run a number of older games on my XPS 12 ultrabook running Windows 8.1. The display of laptop has a native screen resolution of 1920x1080, and Windows is set to use this resolution. When I run an old game designed with lesser resolution in mind (like 1024x1080), its window is stretched vertically, and that leaves black bars on either side of the window.

On other notebooks (like Asus UL30a) a game's window was always stretched both horizontally and vertically to fill the entire screen. While sometimes it looked ugly, it was better than the black bars. Is it possible to force XPS 12 behave in the same way?

I suspect that the Intel chipset or display drivers are responsible for it. However, there is no corresponding settings in both the Intel display control panel and the notebook's BIOS.
