Display adapter/driver locks up randomly

My Inspiron 1750 has been running flawlessly for almost 5 years. A while back I checked to make sure my drivers were up to date and Windows found a newer driver on the Intel website and installed it. Since then I get random lockups when playing videos. The entire computer freezes for anywhere from 30 seconds to a couple of minutes and then continues normally. This happens several times which depends on the length of the video.

I have downloaded the latest Dell driver package for my display (R237653). The .exe file runs to conclusion and outputs a message that the driver was updated. However, when checking, it shows that the old driver is still installed. I believe the problem is that the Dell driver is dated before the installed Intel driver and Windows will not install an older driver.

1. How can I install a driver that is older than the the installed driver?

2. If that is not possible, I have the Dell Vista to Win7 upgrade disc that came with the laptop. The original drivers are on this disc. Is it possible to install the original display adapter driver from this disc?

Thanks,
